‘It’s Different for Mothers: An Irreparable Loss’
Photographic portraits of 16 mothers have been installed in Botanic Gardens as part of the Belfast Photo Festival 2023.
‘It’s Different for Mothers: An Irreparable Loss’ is a photographic insight into the lives of women who have been bereaved during the Troubles-conflict (1968-2010) by the loss of a child. The portraits are of women affected by all actors to the conflict, and from all walks of life. Portraying the unique experience of each woman, is the beginning of a process of recognising and acknowledging that is was “different for mothers”.
The organisers of the exhibition wish to highlight how the women featured are ‘contributors to our peace. They tell our post-conflict society why we must never return to the days of conflict. Their experience tells us why human rights, the rights of women, the rights of children, the right to live free from conflict and in dignity are all so vitally important.’
Evanna Devine, an emerging photographer and student at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology, captured the portraits. This is her debut exhibition.
The exhibition has been organised by Relatives for Justice as part of Peace IV Resilience Programme.
The exhibition runs until 18th May.
